ELBARADEI: U.S., EGYPT IN SECRET TALKS ON FATE OF ISRAEL PEACE TREATY

NOVANEWS

Remark by top Egyptian opposition leader and former IAEA chief comes following significant gains by Islamist parties in country?s recent parliamentary vote.

Haaretz

The United States is engaged in secret talks with Egypt?s ruling military council geared at ensuring that the country?s democratically elected regime will maintain its peace treaty with Israel, top Egyptian opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei said on Tuesday.

Want to know more about how the Arap Spring affects Israel?s Mideast standing? Join the discussion on Haaretz.com? official Facebook page

Results from Egypt?s recent parliamentary vote, which saw considerable gains for Islamist factions such as the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice party and the radical Salafi movement?s Al-Nour Party, have caused some to question the future of Israel?s 1979 peace treaty with its neighbor to the north.

In an apparent attempt to assuage some of these concerns, Al-Nour officials indicated last week that the Salafi movement intended to respect all treaties that Egypt has signed, including the peace deal with Israel.

Al-Nour, which won 25-30 percent of the votes in the first round of Egypt?s parliamentary elections, also said that they are in favor of negotiating with Israel.

Meanwhile, a senior diplomatic official in Jerusalem said Sunday that Israel?s new ambassador in Cairo, Yaakov Amitai, will attempt to open communication channels with Islamic officials in Egypt, including representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood and the radical Salafi movement?s Al-Nour Party.

Speaking to the Iranian semi-official Fars news agency on Tuesday, Elbaradiei, the former International Atomic Energy Agency head, indicated that the future of Israel?s peace treaty with Egypt was at the center of a recent and secret round of talks between U.S. officials and members of the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

?The negotiations were completely secret and confidential,? ElBaradei told Fars, adding that what the ruling military indicated ?said was that the talks were about bilateral and mutual relations, but I believe that Americans wanted to ensure that the deals signed between Egypt and Israel will remain intact if Islamists ascend to power.?

Speaking to Egyptian media on the subject last week, new Israeli envoy to Egypt Yaakov Amitai was asked if he was concerned about the political rise of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He replied that he did not wish to get involved in Egypt?s internal affairs and needed to study the situation further.

Until now, the Israeli government has not attempted to open official contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Jerusalem official?s comments are unusual in light of the Brotherhood?s failure to recognize Israel.

However, representatives of the Islamic movement have told American diplomats that the group did not intend to seek the revocation of Egypt?s peace treaty with Israel.

South Africa: 19 killed in head-on crash

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South African police say 19 people were killed when an overtaking car smashed head-on into a minibus taxi as the nation's holiday accident toll continues to grow.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said both vehicles caught fire after they collided Monday on a road in central Free State.

Some victims were burned beyond recognition.

The police spokesman said Tuesday that it appeared the car was trying to overtake another vehicle when it smashed into the oncoming taxi. All four people in the car and 15 in the taxi died at the scene. Nine injured have been hospitalized.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation said reckless overtaking was one of the main causes for more than 800 deaths that have occurred on South African roads since Dec. 1.

Bobcats' Augustin expected to play vs Heat

(AP) ? If the Bobcats are going to take a step forward this season they're going to need some big plays and strong shooting from point guard D.J. Augustin.

So far, so good.

Augustin scored a team-high 19 points in the Bobcats' 96-95 win over the Bucks in Monday night's season opener, including a driving layup that put his team ahead for good with 36.5 seconds left.

It was a quality win for the young and rebuilding Bobcats.

But the NBA can be a grind, even in a 66-game season, and Augustin and his teammates know they'll face a much stiffer test when LeBron James and the Miami Heat come to town on Wednesday night.

"I watched them play on Christmas and they look like they have a chip on their shoulder," Augustin said. "We know they have a great team, so we have to come in and play hard like we did (against the Bucks)."

Added coach Paul Silas of the Heat: "They're just so talented it's unbelievable."

Silas said he expects to have Augustin available for the game.

Augustin sprained his left ankle in the final minute of Monday night's game while chasing after a loose ball near midcourt. He's had problems with the ankle before. He didn't practice Tuesday but Silas said, "he thinks he might be able to make it (Wednesday) night."

But the Bobcats have to be careful.

Even with backup Kemba Walker looking like the real deal, the Bobcats need Augustin for the long run.

After a rough start as a rookie, Augustin's turnaround as a player coincided with the arrival Silas last December.

Under former coach Larry Brown, Augustin was timid and often afraid to shoot. Then Silas arrived.

"Playing for coach Brown, I was looking over my shoulder because I didn't want to make a mistake," Augustin said. "He's still a great coach and taught me a lot of fundamentals. But with coach Silas, he gives you that chance to be free and make plays."

That was never more evident than in a game last season against Minnesota.

Augustin was having a horrible night shooting from the field, and Silas noticed he was starting to pass up open shots.

So Silas called a timeout.

When Augustin got the sideline, Silas looked him in the eyes and gave the 6-foot point guard a lesson he's never forgotten.

"I brought him over to the bench and I said, 'Son, if you ever pass up another shot I'm going to take you out of the game and I'm not going to play you at all,'" Silas said. "I told him, 'Listen, every time you get the ball, I want you to shoot it.'"

Augustin did just that, making his next couple of shots.

He's not stopped shooting since.

"The fact that I had some confidence in him just seemed to open up a whole new world for him," Silas said.

Augustin's average went from 12.6 points to 14.4 at the end of the season.

"Paul gave me a lot of confidence," Augustin said. "Paul is such a positive coach, such a positive person that he makes you believe in yourself. When you walk out on the court, you feel like every shot is going in. You're able to learn from your mistakes. You're not going to be perfect and he knows that."

Augustin thinks there's something about Silas' laid-back demeanor that meshes with his personality.

"I think it is just how he talks and speaks to you," Augustin said. "He shows everybody that same respect. He's so positive. If you miss a shot, he'll tell you, 'Hey, it's OK, keep shooting.' That makes you want to keep shooting."

That includes in big games against the Heat.

Silas said this game will serve as a measuring stick for the Bobcats and just how far they've come and how far they have to go.

"I'd like to see how we do against a team like that," Silas said. "Can we stay competitive and not get blown away? I think if we do that we will have a chance to really improve. But it's tough to keep a team like that down."

What if: Cousin qualifies -> Grandma opens a CD -> Suddenly all grandchildren are eligible? I could see it being advantageous for an entire family to have grandparents keep a stable of credit union accounts....

You pretty much nailed my thought process using this condition above "Family Members?including grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, grandchildren, children (including adopted and stepchildren) and household members". I'm also curious who is a "household member". If I have a military roommate is he a household member?

Working Hollywood: Animal trainer Bettina Browne

Bettina Browne trained tigers for Fox's new family film "We Bought a Zoo," but of all the felines she's recently wrangled for movies, she considers the toughest customers to be the ordinary house cats she was tasked with taming for director David Fincher's dark, biting thriller, Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

"Tigers and lions are a little bit more dog-like in the sense that they still do like to please you," said Browne, who worked for Birds and Animals Unlimited on the two films. "House cats, if they feel like it, they will. But especially when you're working with them, they're like, 'Nah, I don't really want to do that. It's work.'"

Cattitudes haven't hampered Browne's lifelong love of animals, though. As an undergraduate at USC, she studied anthropology with an emphasis on primates and considered moving to South Africa to be a safari guide. But instead, she finished her degree and tried such endeavors as gallery work and fashion styling before answering the call of the wild. "I met my husband, Eric Weld, and he had just gotten into exotic animal training," she said. "I thought, 'Ah, that's what I want to do, too.'"

On her first job, she trained 7-month-old lion cubs for a Whiskas commercial. But the first time she ever worked with a full-grown male lion ? a 550-pound creature named Felix ? was on 2007's "Prey," which she considers the biggest step in her career.

"It was an unfortunate situation actually because my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, and another trainer on that movie, they got shot," she said. "The African farm they were staying at, these people came and robbed their bungalow and shot them, one in the shoulder and then my husband in his hand."

Browne stepped in to finish the movie with Felix and discovered that he responded much differently to a female rather than a male trainer. "They're a little more lovey, a little more accepting," she said.

Since then, Browne has trained animals of all sizes for films including "Step Brothers," "Angels & Demons" and "Zookeeper," but she saves the lion's share of her love for the big cats.

"Maybe it was from watching 'Born Free' when I was younger, but the big cats are really my first passion," she said. "I always have to step back while I'm working and just be amazed at the fact that I'm on leash, or I'm working a tiger or a lion, and I'm just loving the relationship that I can have with them."

Stars with stripes: Based on Benjamin Mee's memoir, director Cameron Crowe's "We Bought a Zoo" centers on a widowed journalist (Matt Damon) who moves his two children into a struggling California zoo. While Crowe focused on coaxing the best performances from the human actors, Browne turned her attention to the tigers.

"We had Katie, who played the old tiger, Spar," said Browne. "It was nothing too difficult, because it's a zoo. We did some interior shots where she would lie there, and Matt Damon would talk to her. He was very good with the tigers. We also had Kismet and Schicka, the younger tigers, who I actually hand-raised. We did have to teach them to jump up into where their indoor facility was on the movie set. They like to show off their jumping abilities. They all like to work for meat."

On a long leash: "One of the biggest and most important things that we taught the cats for 'We Bought a Zoo' was working on cables," said Browne. "The cables are black, plastic-coated steel aircraft cables, and they would attach to their collars. We had 10- and 20-foot cables, depending on the shot. Because we could not be close to them, they had to be secured so that they would be able to work together and around the actors safely."

Stop and go: According to Browne, house cats tend to work in teams of three, but in the case of the Sweden-set "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," one cat stole the show. "His name is Scotty, who is just a domestic short-haired brown tabby," she said. "He did a very good job playing all roles. He had to come in through the window, and then jump into the cottage and run across the floor into the kitchen."

Just act natural: "On 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,' I definitely learned to work a cat without food, because director David Fincher likes a lot of natural action, and natural action you can't do with food," Browne said. "Scotty's very toy- and movement-driven. So I learned to work him with my hand and just little subtle movements. I had never worked with a cat in that way before, so that was fun and new. Whenever you go on set, you never know what you're getting into. You just have to have that personality where you can go with the flow."

Yemen national airline employees end strike

Employees of Yemen's national airline, Yemenia Airways, ended a two-day strike Thursday after the country's new transport minister suspended the company's director over accusations of corruption.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Holiday travel: not so hellish after all?

There has been a growing trend of strikes, involving industrial workers, students and even soldiers after the swearing in of a new national unity government this month. That followed the agreement of longtime Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down after months of protests.

The strikers have generally called for dismissal of longtime Saleh loyalists or officials perceived as corrupt.

The pilots union welcomed the decision of the transport minister to strip the authority of Abdel-Khalq al-Qadhi over the airline, calling it "brave." He is Saleh's son-in-law.

Thousands of striking workers wanted to see him put on trial over charges he misused the company's assets and drove it into bankruptcy.

The strike stopped all flights in and out of the country's two main airports, in the capital Sanaa and the southern port of Aden.

In other labor actions around the country, workers at a large cement factory in Hodeida have been on strike for three days, demanding the factory head be replaced for embezzling assets.

In a rare strike in the country's military, hundreds of soldiers from a brigade in the southern al-Daleh province prevented their commander from entering the camp, accusing him of corruption. The soldiers encircled the camp with armored vehicles, and soldiers to prevent the major general, a member of Saleh's tribe, from entering.

A defense ministry official, speaking on condition anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters, said negotiations with battalion officers were under way to resolve the crisis.

German court's preliminary ruling says Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1N isn't aping the iPad

Round a few corners, a bit of nip-tuck and a tossed-on N. Oh, and probably just being sick and tired of the whole ordeal. We're assuming that's the recipe for getting the Cupertino-sourced gorilla off of Samsung's back, as a judge at the district court in Düsseldorf, Germany just issued a preliminary ruling that effectively clears the Galaxy Tab 10.1N from claims that it too mimics the iconic iPad. If you'll recall, the court blocked German sales of the original Tab 10.1 back in September, following Apple's arguments that Sammy's tab just looked too much like the iPad. Not surprisingly, the subtly-redesigned Tab 10.1N still drew fire from Apple's lawyers, but it's looking like they'll be riding home on the losing train this go 'round. A final verdict is expected on February 9th, of which we're sure you'll be resting uneasily on the edge of your seat to hear the result of. Courtroom fever -- catch it!

German court's preliminary ruling says Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1N isn't aping the iPad originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 11:10:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Best Buy is bad Santa, cancels online orders

Dario Cantatore / Getty Images

Where's our canceled orders? Electronics retailer Best Buy has announced that, due to tremendous demand, it wouldn't be able to fulfill some online orders placed with the store in November and December.

By Marisa Taylor

Retailers have offered special Internet deals and free shipping for online purchases as a means to entice shoppers to make ample purchases this holiday season.

But that strategy may have backfired for at least one retailer. Electronics retailer Best Buy announced late on Wednesday that, due to tremendous demand, it wouldn?t be able to fulfill some online orders placed with the store in November and December.

"Due to overwhelming demand of hot product offerings on BestBuy.com during the November and December time period, we have encountered a situation that has affected redemption of some of our customers' online orders," the company said in a statement. "We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and we have notified the affected customers."

Like many retailers, Best Buy had offered free shipping on all orders through December 27, without any minimum purchase requirements, which may have contributed to a high volume of purchases.?

The company didn?t specify how many orders would be canceled or which products it had run out of.?Best Buy also released a statement on its website?Thursday that promoted?savings on a ?wide selection? of tech-related gifts, both ?in-store and online.?

TheStreet.com reported on Tuesday that some Best Buy customers had received email notices from the company informing them that their orders would be canceled, and some users took to BestBuy.com message boards to discuss the issue.

For example, user Wavelandscott said that he had ordered a Playstation 3 console from BestBuy.com on Black Friday, only to receive an email from the retailer weeks later that his order had been canceled because it wouldn?t be receiving any more of the product from the supplier. ?Are you trying to get?everyone to shop at Amazon instead?? he complained.?

CNBC's Jane Wells explains why the electronics retailer won't be able to fill some of the customers' online orders, just days before Christmas.

rubber band IWO Brunch, December 17th

What a long, strange trip it?s been.

The market for the year can essentially be decscribed as 3 big, stupid, ugly, mean-reverting trading ranges.

One high, one low, and one in the middle.

Any attempt to look for breakouts or breakdowns on the $SPY has been rewarded twice and punished about 80 times.

In this Episode of IWO Brunch, we discuss:

  • the huge support level in the euro $FXE
  • the odds of a rally into the end of the year
  • a few stocks that don?t suck ? $SBUX and $V come to mind

(AP) ? The Senate passed legislation Saturday extending a Social Security payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for just two months, handing President Barack Obama a partial victory while setting the stage for another fight in February.

It also brought a peaceful end to a year-long battle over spending by passing a $1 trillion-plus catchall budget bill that wraps together the day-to-day budgets for 10 Cabinet departments and military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The House passed the measure Friday, and the White House has signaled that Obama will sign it.

The renewal of the 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the additional millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

As a condition for GOP support of the payroll tax measure, Obama has to accept a provision that forces him to decide within 60 days whether to approve or reject a proposed a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Obama didn't reference the pipeline issue in a brief appearance at the White House after the vote. He welcomed the Senate's passage of the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance extension and said it would be "inexcusable" for Congress not to extend them for the rest of 2012 when lawmakers return from their holiday break.

The budget bill, passed 67-32, heads to the White House for Obama's signature; the payroll tax measure won a 89-10 tally that send it back to the House ? where many Republicans only reluctantly support it ? for a vote early next week.

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, would not predict whether the House would accept the Senate payroll tax measure, saying GOP leaders would have to discuss it with the rank and file. But Democrats assume Senate Republicans would not have allowed the short-term measure to advance without a signal from Boehner that the House would go along.

Democratic and GOP leaders opted for the short-term extension of the payroll tax and jobless benefits measure after failing to agree on big enough spending cuts to pay for a full-year renewal. The measure also provides a 60-day reprieve from a scheduled 27 percent cut in the fees paid to doctors who treat Medicare patients.

The $33 billion cost of the measure would be covered by raising fees on new mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The fees, drawn from a Treasury Department housing finance market reform plan, would effectively raise the interest rate on home loans guaranteed by the mortgage giants and the Federal Housing Administration by one-tenth of a percentage point.

The idea is to open up the market to private companies currently priced out by the implicit subsidies of Fannie and Freddie.

The White House says the fee would increase the monthly cost of a typical $220,000 mortgage by almost $15 a month. Over 30 years, the fees would increase the total cost of such a mortgage by more than $5,000.

In contrast, a worker making a $100,000 salary would reap a tax cut of about $330 through the two-month extension of the payroll tax cut. A worker with a typical $50,000 salary would get just a $165 tax cut.

Officials said that in private talks, the two sides had hoped to reach agreement on the full one-year extension of the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits that Obama had made the centerpiece of the jobs program he submitted to Congress last fall.

Those efforts failed when the two sides could not agree on enough offsetting cuts to blunt the measure's impact on the debt.

The failure tees up the issue again for early next year, but it won't get any easier to agree on spending cuts.

Neither House Speaker Boehner nor his aides participated in the negotiations, although McConnell said he was optimistic about the measure's chances for final approval. The payroll tax cut is unpopular in GOP ranks and another vote in two months could present a headache for GOP leaders.

On the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, the legislation requires the president to grant a permit unless he makes a determination that it is "not in the national interest." One senior administration official said the president would almost certainly refuse to grant a permit. The official was not authorized to speak publicly.

The White House on Friday backed away from Obama's earlier threat to veto any bill that linked the payroll tax cut extension with a Republican demand for a speedy decision on the proposed 1,700-mile pipeline. Obama said on Dec. 7 that "any effort to try to tie Keystone to the payroll tax cut I will reject. So everybody should be on notice."

The president recently announced he was postponing a decision on the much-studied pipeline until after the 2012 election. Environmentalists oppose the project, but several unions support it. The legislation puts the president in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between customary political allies.

The State Department, in an analysis released this summer, said the pipeline project would create up to 6,000 jobs during construction, while developer TransCanada put the total at 20,000 in direct employment.

The pipeline would carry oil from western Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries, passing through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The spending bill locks in spending cuts that conservative Republicans won from the White House and Democrats earlier in the year.

Republicans also won their fight to block new federal regulations for light bulb energy efficiency, coal dust in mines and clean water permits for construction of timber roads.

The White House turned back GOP attempts to block limits on greenhouse gases, mountaintop removal mining and hazardous emissions from utility plants, industrial boilers and cement kilns.

Key witness in Penn State abuse scandal may testify Friday (Reuters)

HARRISBURG, Pa (Reuters) ? A key witness who said that he saw former assistant Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky raping a 10-year-old boy in 2002 may testify in court on Friday, a legal source said.

Mike McQueary, a graduate assistant in the university's football program in 2002, is expected to testify at a court hearing on charges against former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and finance official Gary Schultz.

Curley and Schultz were charged last month with perjury before a grand jury for testimony they gave about their knowledge of the alleged abuse.

McQueary's story is important to the case against Sandusky and the two officials because he testified to a grand jury that he witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a boy in the showers of the football building, and reported it to then head coach Joe Paterno.

Paterno said he told his boss, Curley, but no one told police, and Sandusky's alleged behavior continued, according to a grand jury report.

The preliminary hearing on Friday is to determine if there is enough evidence for Curley and Schultz to go to trial.

McQueary has not been charged in the case but was put on administrative leave from the university, as was Curley. Schultz retired shortly after he was arraigned November 7 in suburban Harrisburg.

Paterno and Penn State President Graham Spanier were fired for not telling police what they knew.

Sandusky waived his preliminary hearing on Tuesday and will go straight to trial on 52 counts of alleged sex abuse of boys over a 15 year period.

"We anticipate Mike McQueary will be at the hearing," said Martine Charles, a spokesperson for the attorneys representing the university administrators.

Unlike Sandusky, Curley and Schultz are not expected to waive their preliminary hearing before District Judge William Wenner.

At issue is what McQueary actually saw in the football shower. In the grand jury report, McQueary, who was 28 at the time, is quoted as saying he had "heard rhythmic slapping sounds" in a team shower room. Since Curley's and Schultz's arrests, different versions of what McQueary witnessed have been reported.

Denver forms committee to explore 2022 Olympics (AP)

DENVER ? The city of Denver is forming a committee that will look into bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The committee will present findings to mayor Michael Hancock and Gov. John Hickenlooper, who said Friday the idea of a bid is worth taking seriously.

The International Olympic Committee awarded the 1976 Winter Games to Denver, but the city later turned them down. IOC president Jacques Rogge said this year that the history would not have a bearing on a future Denver bid.

The Reno-Tahoe area is also considering making a run at the 2022 Games, though the U.S. Olympic Committee is not committed to backing an American bid; the USOC wants to resolve a revenue-sharing dispute with the IOC before committing to bids.
