Massive Energy Storage Technologies Could Revitalize the Power Grid (preview)

Feature Articles | Energy & Sustainability Cover Image: March 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

If renewable energy is going to take off, we need good ways of storing it for the times when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing

Image: Christopher Griffith/Trunk Archive

In Brief

  • The sun does not shine at night, and the wind does not always blow; methods to store large amounts of energy for downtimes are needed to make widespread solar and wind power more practical.
  • Some utility companies already use excess solar or wind power to pump water to uphill reservoirs, where it can later fall to turn turbines; this pumped-hydro approach could be installed in many more locations.
  • Other viable energy storage solutions include facilities that compress air into large underground caverns, that heat fluids or molten salts that later create steam to turn turbines, or that can charge advanced batteries. These meth?ods require breakthroughs to make them more efficient so they can compete on price with the cost of electricity from traditional power plants.

To see the big obstacle confronting renewable energy, look at Denmark. The small nation has some of the world?s largest wind farms. Yet because consumer demand for electricity is often lowest when the winds blow hardest, Denmark has to sell its overflow of electrons to neighboring countries for pennies?only to buy energy back when demand rises, at much higher prices. As a result, Danish consumers pay some of the highest electricity rates on the planet.

Craft room tour with Marty's Musings | Craftaholics Anonymous?

Marty from Marty?s Musings is here to show off her Craft Room makeover and share some organization tips. enjoy! -Linda

Linda at Craftaholics Anonymous (love that title!) asked me to share my scrapbook room makeover and any helpful organizational tips I gleaned from the process. My original post is here?but since I?ve worked in this room for six months now I?ll also share some of the things that worked and didn?t work for me.

The transformation was done over the course of a few weeks. This is the room my oldest son had been sleeping in for a year or so. (He has since moved to college. ~sigh~) Many of his clothes and things, though, were still in his brother?s room. You can tell from the before pictures that my stuff and his life were all crammed in together! I didn?t scrapbook in here because there was no available space. I had all my ?stuff? but nowhere to work! The room contained a full bed which was entirely too big for the room. The space is 10? x 12?, fairly small for a bedroom, but we live in an older house and that?s as good as it gets!

I spent weeks devouring websites and magazines trying to plan out my space. I was possessed with this project, probably more than any other one in our 21 years in this house. My husband and I enjoyed countless hours talking through my options and ways to keep the remodel as cheap as possible. We actually transformed the room in stages, moving out the full bed, chest and bookcase and replacing them with a twin bed. This immediately gave us a tremendous freedom in space! My husband also painted in stages as we repositioned things around the room. I also cleaned out my supplies BEFORE we started moving things around and sold the extras on Craigslist. (First mistake, not selling my supplies for more money. The lady who bought my extras got a great deal!)

?BEFORE

AFTER

?And voila! Here?s the most important wall in the room. (You can click on each picture for a closer examination).?If you look carefully in the ?after? pictures you will see many items reused and recycled in my new and improved room.

?This picture highlights the same wall with some of my goodies, prices and where I obtained them. Many, many of my storage solutions came from yard sales.

?You will notice that my counter is waist high. I scrap and create standing up and there was much consternation over the exact height of the counter. Luckily, we figured right and it is perfect! I bought this desk chair at a yard sale and it was a great buy and the most comfortable chair. (My cats like it, too!)

The biggest splurge was the flat screen TV. The screen doubles as a computer monitor. Without this we couldn?t figure out a place to put the old TV without losing a ton of space. This was a great purchase. I also splurged on an Ott-lite because I had heard wonderful things about them. Half price at Jo-Ann?s. ?The countertop was discounted at Home Depot and I adore it! Blends in with the room without showing lots of dust and ?mistakes!?

I used many glass jars (mixed and matched) for storage of small embellishments, buttons, brads, etc. I think these were from a spice rack I found at a yard sale.

Love my label maker for tags!

I have had these black drawers for several years and love them for organizing so many different things including patterned and solid paper scraps (separated into small and large), misc. tools, even a drawer of nail polish! Can I just say I?m in love with my label maker? I destroyed the one I started with so I bought another one just like it.

Brads and eyelets

Stamp pads

?This is one of my favorite storage solutions! I adore ribbon and have far too many rolls that I have gotten at yard sales and craft stores. I wanted to be able to see as much of it as possible because it inspires me and I use it often on cards and layouts. ?My husband rigged the dowel rods and hooks. A perfect solution plus it?s pretty to look at!

?I use a Making Memories Desktop Carousel?for all my crucial items. When I go to a crop I just take it with me like it is! It includes my adhesives, glues, notepads, corner rounder, etc.

I have a stool here in case I want to scrap or work sitting down. One of my top goals for this room was keeping my Cricut out to use whenever I wanted. Score! This little table was in our living room and I repurposed it for my room. Perfect!

My husband is a painting contractor and often brings home things others are getting rid of. He was given this rolling craft table that stores underneath my counter but also opens to give me a tremendous amount of space if I want to invite a friend over or need extra room. Free!

My husband built this wooden shelving unit for paper but I now use it for idea books stored in the closet. I used two of the tackle boxes for alphabet letters and misc. small embellishments. It?s not the most immaculate closet but I can get to everything!

Most important storage: my secret stash of chocolate (the little green box)! Every crafter needs one of these!

I use these hardware organizers for storage of individual letters and other misc. embellishments.

?My scrapbook room?s design ended up revolving around the two units I bought at Goodwill for $20 total (below). ?The unit had 6?x6? cubbies with removable partitions. I removed several of them to allow the units to be used for 12?12 paper. Absolutely perfect solution for my massive collection! (I am slightly paper crazy.) This also allowed smaller compartments at the top for some of my other supplies.

We bought the twin bed with headboard from my niece and used a mattress and bedding we already owned. Best feature: more drawers for my ribbon stash! It seriously was taking over the world!

I wanted a place to display recent layouts and this was our solution. I love the inspiration and feeling of accomplishment it gives me.

This wall was a work in process. I got the black shelf at a yard sale for $3 and used pictures I already had for the inserts. I used half off coupons and bought two 12?12 frames at Michael?s and found a couple more at a yard sale. I then used free collage prints that I had gotten at Walgreen?s, matted them and used the Cricut for the date. I love this wall and it only cost about $15!

One of the keys to my scrapbook ?organizational system? was gleaned from this book: Photo Freedom by Stacy Julian. If you follow the link it will take you to Amazon, with the new book price showing right at $100. No, I didn?t pay that price. It was more like $20. I?m guessing if you search you can find it cheaper (please, let?s hope so.) The basic idea is a filing system for photos that either puts your photos into categories or in chronological order. ?For those pictures I?m fairly certain I will scrapbook by event, I put them into two 12?12 3-ring binders in pocket pages. I have 10 years of pictures (not scrapbooked) in these two binders.

After I scrap my pics onto a layout there are always leftover pics. These go into one of four storage boxes, sorted by category. My categories are All About Us, People We Love, Places We Go, and Things We Do (each represented in a different color binder). ?Within these categories are subcategories such as one for each individual child, our extended family, church, vacation, holidays, etc.

I don?t worry about scrapping chronologically. I never really have. This system of Stacy Julian?s set me free! If I want to scrap an event I go to my binders located in my scraproom and look for the pics chronologically. But if I want to scrap a connection through the years (such as the layout displayed above of my daughter and her dad) I go straight to my storage boxes and the pics are right there! No searching through backup CD?s and boxes for pics of the two of them together.

If you can?t tell I adore this system. It works for me! The other part of my preserving our memories comes with relocating my favorite scrapbooks to a bookcase directly by the front door. If there were to be a fire they would be easily grabbed on the way out! Other than family and pets there is nothing more important to me than these albums. They contain our family history and memories.

Category storage boxes

Albums located by the front door

?These are not all of my albums but they are the ones I cherish most. They also include my Project Life?albums from the last three years (and that, my friends, is a post for another day!)

About $500!

Lessons learned from my remodel:

**time spent researching and dreaming and planning are not spent in vain!

**use your space wisely and evaluate where to put your most used items

**decide whether you want open or closed storage (I used both)

**if you want to do things as inexpensively as possible you have to be prepared to take your time and collect storage items over a period of time

**the room is always a work in progress

Injunction to Stop IPad Sales at Apple Stores Rejected by Chinese ...

The U.S. tech giant gains a small victory in regards to its ongoing trademark dispute in China over the iPad name, since the request for a legal injunction which would have forced Apple to stop iPad sales in its Shanghai stores has been rejected by the Chinese Court.

On Thursday, the press got a hold of an official statement coming from the Shanghai court, in which they didn?t grant the injunction requested by Chinese company Proview (in case you forgot, Proview got the iPad trademark ever since 2001) in its ongoing battle with Apple. The court declared that all further hearings will be postponed until a ruling will be made in one other Chinese court, where ownership of the trademark is under debate.

In the past, Apple received quite a legal blow when a court in Shenzhen, China rejected in December the company?s claims to the iPad trademark. However, Apple, made an appeal regarding this verdict in the Guangdong provincial high court; the next hearing is scheduled to take place next week.

The Shanghai court said that since the case has yet to be reviewed by the Guangdong court the ownership of the iPad trademark still remains unclear.

Proview, which is on the verge of bankruptcy, has filed official complaints and legal actions with regulatory officials in order to stop the iPad from being sold in the country. A court in the Chinese city of Huizhou ruled on Friday that the local electronics retailer Sundan had stop selling the iPad models available on stock at one of its stores due to trademark infringement. A lawyer representing Sundan declared on behalf of its employers that the company is considering appealing the decision.

Ma Dongxiao, one of the lawyers representing Proview, declared that the Shanghai court?s ruling was not the final decision. The iPad sales are being investigated by more than 30 regulatory offices all over the country, according to Proview. The sum the company expects Apple to pay for the acquisition of the trademark is rumored to be some US$400 million.

Carolyn Wu, an Apple spokeswoman declared that Proview refused to honor its agreement their company after they had already paid for the trademark a few years back.

LinkedIn Founder Shares Advice: 'Take Intelligent Risk'

Suggesting they think like entrepreneurs, Reid Hoffman has a strong message for college seniors: 'If you don't keep evolving, you start dying.'
By Benjamin Wagner

LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman
Photo: Michelle Crowe/MTV

Heads up, college seniors. Graduation's right around the corner, college debt's hanging over your head, and that career track you were promised is f'd.

The good news? Reid Hoffman, who launched LinkedIn, says hope is not lost. Hoffman is the guy who invented social media. No, not Zuckerberg. Hoffman invented SocialNet while the Facebook billionaire was still in middle school. Hoffman then went on to play key roles in PalPay and Zynga before launching LinkedIn.

In his new book, "The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career," he shares key advice for the class of 2012: In a nutshell, approach your career like an entrepreneur.

"You have to think about, 'OK, how do I invest in myself?' " Hoffman explained as part of MTV's Pioneers Speakers Series. " 'How do I build soft assets? Skills, relationships, but also, how do I take an intelligent risk?' Small gambles, things that could lead to a breakout for you."

"Start-up of You," co-written with Ben Casnocha, breaks entrepreneurial thinking down into byte-sized bits, and provides examples from the brains behind Twitter, Flickr and more. The headlines? Be nimble ("permanent beta" in Silicon Valley speak), and build a better network.

"You are not a finished product. If you don't keep evolving, you start dying," Hoffman explained. "And your network is key to how do you find opportunities and how do you get access to the right kinds of people and opportunities.

"It is no longer guaranteed that you will have a career when you graduate from college," he added. "You actually have to live and work entrepreneurially."

This from the billionaire at the helm of a social network half the size of the United States.

Basel extends Champions run

By STUART CONDIE

updated 6:56 p.m. ET Feb. 22, 2012

Basel keeps upsetting some of European soccer's biggest powers.

Substitute Valentin Stocker scored in the 86th minute, giving the Swiss team a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in the first leg of the Champions League's second round.

In the group stage, Basel tied Manchester United at Old Trafford, then defeated the Red Devils to eliminate the three-time champions,

"We have beaten possibly two of the best teams in the world," Basel goalkeeper Yann Sommer said.

Marseille also scored late for a 1-0 home win, with Andre Ayew connecting on a header in the third minute of injury time against 2010 champion Inter Milan, which has lost six of its last seven games.

"We can score two goals, no problem," Inter coach Claudio Ranieri said.

Basel twice hit the frame of the goal before Stocker scored in the 86th minute on a shot through goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's legs. Sommer made a string of fine saves at noisy St. Jakob Park.

"It's very simple ? we have an unbelievable will to win and a great understanding among the team," said 36-year-old Basel coach Heiko Vogel, once a Bayern youth coach.

A four-time winner of Europe's top club competition, Bayern hosts the Champions League final on May 19.

"The alarm bells are going to be ringing," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said. "We're not in an ideal position for the return game. We need to start winning."

Marseille extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games and has the advantage going into the second leg of the total-goals series, which will be played March 13.

"Nothing's done yet. I'm happy and proud because the players believed in themselves until the end," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. "They were up against a team that has seen it all before, with players who are used to playing in quarterfinals, in semifinals, and yet they still won."

___

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? Sergio Aguero opened the scoring just 19 seconds in, and Manchester City eased past defending champion Porto 3-0 Wednesday night for a 6-1 aggregate win that advanced it to the third round of the Europa League.

Edin Dzeko scored in the 76th minute, and David Silva (84th) and David Pizarro (86th) added goals as City advanced to a matchup with Legia Warsaw or Sporting Lisbon in the final 16.

___

SIENA, Italy (AP) ? Catania jumped from 16th place to a tie for 10th in Serie A, winning 1-0 at Siena on Francesco Lodi's 23rd-minute penalty kick following a hand ball by Alessandro Gazzi

Catania (7-7-9) had never beaten Siena (5-11-8) in nine previous matches in the top Italian league.

Siena remained in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

___

PARIS (AP) ? Lille got back into the title race by defeating last-place Sochaux 1-0 to pull within six points first-place Paris Saint-Germain in the French league.

Nolan Roux headed in a corner in the 76th minute.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored three goals to lead Saint-Etienne over Lorient 4-2, and Caen beat Auxerre 2-1.

Those three matches had been postponed earlier this month because of a cold snap.

PSG has 51 points, one ahead of Montpellier, which is followed by Lille (45) and Saint-Etienne (42).

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic extended its lead over Glasgow rival Rangers to 20 points in the Scottish Premier League with a 2-0 win over last-place Dunfermline.

Defender Charlie Mulgrew scored his second goal in four days and James Forrest added a late goal to give Celtic its 19th straight win in domestic league and cup competition.

Michael Higdon scored three goals in third-place Motherwell's 4-3 win over Hibernian.

Supreme Court debate: Is lying about being a war hero protected speech?

Supreme Court justices heard arguments over the Stolen Valor Act, which bars lies over receiving military medals, but the discussion broadened into whether there is any value worth protecting in falsehood.

Members of the US Supreme Court grappled on Wednesday with the difficult task of deciding whether the First Amendment protects a free speech right to claim to be a decorated war hero ? even if you aren?t one.

The high court is being asked to determine the constitutionality of the Stolen Valor Act of 2005, which makes it a federal crime to falsely claim to have received a military medal.

During an hour-long argument, the justices weighed competing claims upholding the necessity of the statute against the dangers to free speech of a government willing to punish its citizens for something that is merely said.

Several justices seemed troubled by the prospect of opening a door to future laws that might ban false speech concerning one?s receipt of a high school diploma or off-the-cuff comments made by a candidate in an election campaign.

Others appeared ready to uphold the statute as a reasonable regulation of a particularly egregious kind of lie undeserving of constitutional protection.

?I believe there is no First Amendment value in falsehood,? Justice Antonin Scalia declared, flatly.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito expressed similar sentiments.

When Jonathan Libby, a deputy public defender from Los Angeles, struggled to answer repeated questions about the constitutional value of a lie, Justice Stephen Breyer broke into the discussion with an example of a situation justifying a deliberate falsehood that would be both honorable and constitutionally-protected: ?Are you hiding Jews in the cellar??

Chief Justice Roberts brushed the comment aside. The statute regulates a ?purely false statement about one?s self.? he said. ?What is the first Amendment value in [allowing such lies]??

?Our Founders believed that Congress as a general principle doesn?t get to tell us what we as individuals can and cannot say,? Mr. Libby replied. In other areas where the high court has long allowed regulation of speech, it involved speech that caused specific harm to others such as libel, obscenity, or incitement, Libby said.

The case, US v. Alvarez (11-210), stems from comments made by Xavier Alvarez, the elected member of a local water district board in southern California. In July 2007, Mr. Alvarez introduced himself during a meeting as a retired US Marine who had served for 25 years and won the Medal of Honor in 1987.

None of it was true.

Alvarez was charged with violating the Stolen Valor Act. He faced up to six months in prison.

After an FBI investigation, Alvarez entered a conditional guilty plea. His lawyer, Mr. Libby, continued to fight the charge, arguing that the underlying statute, the Stolen Valor Act, violated Alvarez?s free speech rights.

Prosecutors defended the law as a narrowly focused regulation of a discrete category of speech that served the important government interest of preventing the dilution of the value of military medals.

An aerial view of White Island, New Zealand

Sara Sylvester took this photo of New Zealand's White Island in early February. The island is about 180 miles south of Auckland, off New Zealand's eastern coast. The uninhabited island is home to an active volcano.

"Flying over the water and approaching an active volcano was surreal and knowing that we were going to land on the volcano and walk around it was very exciting," Sylvester told TODAY.com

"While on the tour, we saw bubbling mud, a crater lake, an abandoned sulfur mine that closed in the 1930's, brilliant yellow and orange sulfur crystals and steam vents," Sylvester said. "It was a once in a lifetime adventure!"?

NEW YORK (AP) ? The mayor faced off with the president of Yale University on Tuesday over an effort by the city's police department to monitor Muslim student groups for any signs that their members harbored terrorist sympathies.

The Associated Press revealed over the weekend that in recent years the New York Police Department has kept close watch on Muslim student associations across the Northeast. The effort included daily tracking of student websites and blogs, monitoring who was speaking to the groups and sending an undercover officer on a whitewater rafting trip with students from the City College of New York.

Yale President Richard Levin was among a number of academics who condemned the effort in a statement Monday, while Rutgers University and leaders of student Muslim groups elsewhere called for investigations into the monitoring.

"I am writing to state, in the strongest possible terms, that police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States," Levin wrote.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, dismissed those criticisms as baseless.

"I don't know why keeping the country safe is antithetical to the values of Yale," he said.

He said it was "ridiculous" to argue that there was anything wrong with officers keeping an eye on websites that are available to the general public.

"Of course we're going to look at anything that's publicly available in the public domain," he said. "We have an obligation to do so, and it is to protect the very things that let Yale survive."

Asked by a reporter if he thought it was a "step too far" to send undercover investigators to accompany students on rafting vacations, Bloomberg said: "No. We have to keep this country safe."

"It's very cute to go and blame everybody and say we should stay away from anything that smacks of intelligence gathering," he said. "The job of our law enforcement is to make sure that they prevent things. And you only do that by being proactive."

Bloomberg, an independent, added that he believed that police officers had respected people's privacy and obeyed the law.

The campus monitoring program was part of a broad effort by the NYPD, initiated after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, to try to spot any burgeoning terror cells in the U.S. before they had a chance to act. The NYPD monitoring of college campuses included schools far beyond the city limits.

Police talked with local authorities about professors 300 miles away in upstate Buffalo. The undercover agent who attended the City College rafting trip recorded students' names and noted in police intelligence files how many times they prayed. Detectives trawled Muslim student websites every day and, although professors and students had not been accused of any wrongdoing, their names were recorded in reports prepared for police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Officers kept tabs on student groups at Yale; Columbia; The University of Pennsylvania; Syracuse; Rutgers; New York University; Clarkson University; the State University of New York campuses in Buffalo, Albany, Stony Brook and Potsdam; Queens College, Baruch College, Brooklyn College and La Guardia Community College.

Levin said Yale's police department did not participate in any monitoring by the NYPD and was unaware of it.

An NYPD spokesman, Paul Browne, explained the effort as an attempt to learn more about student organizations that could be ripe for infiltration by terror recruiters. He cited 12 people arrested or convicted on terrorism charges in the United States and abroad who had once been members of Muslim student associations, or MSAs.

He acknowledged that police monitored student websites and collected publicly available information but said law-abiding students have nothing to fear.

"Students who advertised events or sent emails about regular events should not be worried about a terrorism file being kept on them," he said. "NYPD only investigated persons who we had reasonable suspicion to believe might be involved in unlawful activities."

A Muslim student leader at Yale, Faisal Hamid, challenged the NYPD's justification.

"An MSA is simply a group of Muslim students; just because a terrorist happened to be member of an MSA does not mean that MSAs, which nationally represents hundreds of thousands of Muslim students, have any connection to criminal activity," Hamid said. "Law enforcement should pursue actual leads, not imaginary ones based on Islamophobia."

Syracuse University does "not approve of, or support, any surveillance or investigation of student groups based solely on ethnicity, religion or political viewpoint," said Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs at Syracuse.

Columbia University "would obviously be concerned about anything that could chill our essential values of academic freedom or intrude on student privacy," spokesman Robert Hornsby said.

The University of Buffalo said in a statement that it "does not conduct this kind of surveillance, and, if asked, UB would not voluntarily cooperate with such a request. As a public university, UB strongly supports the values of freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and a reasonable expectation of privacy."

The University of Pennsylvania contacted the NYPD and received assurances that none of its students is being monitored, a spokesman said.

The Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations called for officials to investigate to determine the extent of the monitoring and how to prevent it from happening again.

"They're just going out and casting a wide net around a whole community, so they're criminalizing in a way a whole community based on their religion," said Mongi Dhaouadi, director of CAIR in Connecticut.

Rutgers University, based in New Jersey, called for the NYPD to investigate its own activities. The Muslim Student Association at Rutgers called the monitoring a violation of civil rights.

"The Rutgers populace should openly condemn the clear violations of the NYPD, who conducted illegitimate profiling outside of their jurisdiction and breached the constitutional rights of an individual," the Rutgers student group said in a statement.

The Association of Muslim American Lawyers called for the New York attorney general to investigate.

The Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada expressed concerns as well. Its president, Zahir Latheef, said the NYPD "clearly overstepped its boundaries when it began spying on average American Muslim college students who were simply taking whitewater rafting trips or innocently participating in school activities at their college or university campus."

The Muslim Students Association of the University at Buffalo said it felt discriminated against "by this secret investigation conducted by a police agency 400 miles away."

The student monitoring was part of a much larger intelligence operation that has put entire Muslim neighborhoods under scrutiny. The NYPD built databases showing where Muslims lived, worked, shopped and prayed. Plainclothes officers known as rakers eavesdropped in cafes, and informants known as mosque crawlers reported on weekly sermons.

Defenders of those efforts say police investigators need to understand the community to spot potential plots.

Bloomberg has repeatedly cited the need for vigilance, although he has insisted that the NYPD only follows leads and denied that it engages in wholesale spying.

Asked whether he was aware of an NYPD agent being sent on a college rafting trip, Bloomberg said, "I have no idea. The only whitewater rafting I've done I did with my daughter. I don't think she had a lot of information that I was interested in. In terms of her political views."

Since the AP began reporting on these programs in August, civil liberties groups and nearly three dozen members of Congress have called for the Justice Department to investigate.

But calls for an inquiry have yielded little. The NYPD's intelligence unit operates in secret. Even the City Council, which funds the department, isn't told about police intelligence operations. And though the NYPD receives hundreds of millions of dollars in federal money, the administration of President Barack Obama has repeatedly sidestepped questions about whether it endorses the NYPD's tactics.
