Poll: Santorum opens 10-point lead (Politico)

Rick Santorum?s national lead over Mitt Romney has ballooned 10 percentage points, even as Romney maintained his reputation as the most likely Republican candidate to beat President Barack Obama, two new surveys show.

In Gallup?s daily tracking rolling average, taken Feb. 15-19, Santorum leads Romney 36 percent to 26 percent, Santorum?s largest lead ever.

Meanwhile, fellow candidates Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul remain well behind in the national tracking poll of registered Republican voters at 13 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Last week, Santorum had risen to within 2 points of Romney, with 30 percent to the former Massachusetts governor?s 32 percent.

However, in a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Feb. 16-19, Romney remained ahead among both Democrats and Republicans as the one seen as most electable in November.

Asked who was more likely to beat President Barack Obama, Romney was chosen over Santorum, 54 percent to 29 percent, among all national adults. Republicans and Republican leaners gave Romney slightly higher results, 58 percent to Santorum?s 32 percent.

Democrats viewed the question similarly: A majority ? 52 percent ? chose Romney over Santorum as the most electable. Only 27 percent picked Santorum as more likely to beat Obama.

The Gallup Daily tracking poll surveyed 1,194 Republican registered voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The joint USA Today/Gallup Poll surveyed 1,014 adults and the same sampling error.
